Untouched Alpine Wilderness
The Accursed Mountains remained almost entirely off-limits to outsiders until the early 2000s. Today they offer trekking with a frontier quality that the Alps lost generations ago — without the lifts, the coffee-shop prices, or the crowds.
Living Highland Culture
The Kanun — a 15th-century code of highland law governing hospitality, marriage, property and blood feud — is still informally observed in remote villages. Nowhere else in Europe can you encounter traditions of this antiquity still genuinely alive.
The Great Slow Journeys
The Komani Lake ferry and the Valbona-to-Theth trail have become, among a small community of serious European slow travellers, the two essential experiences of the northern Balkans. Both remain unhurried and impossible to replicate.

Before you travel
Berat sits 122 km south of Tirana's Nënë Tereza International Airport (TIA). The drive takes 1 hour 30 minutes via the SH72. Furgon minibuses depart Tirana's Kombinat bus terminal from 06:00, running every 30–60 minutes until mid-afternoon (approx. 600 ALL, 2 hours). We recommend arriving by car or private transfer for maximum flexibility around the city's hillside quarters.
