North Albania & The Accursed Mountains

Europe’s Last Great Wilderness

Glacial alpine valleys, secluded stone towers (kulla), and the legendary trails connecting Theth and Valbona across untouched jagged ridges.

The Essence of Albania

Shaped by altitude, isolation, and an unbroken code of honour

North Albania is the country's final frontier — a landscape of glacier-carved valleys, 2,700-metre peaks and stone guesthouses where the Kanun, an ancient highland law, still governs daily life more than any statute passed in Tirana. The region spans from the lowland shores of Lake Shkodër in the west to the Kosovo border in the east, encompassing the Albanian Alps — locally called the Bjeshkët e Namuna, the Accursed Mountains.

For most of the 20th century it remained closed to the world: first by Ottoman mountain tradition, then by Hoxha's rigid isolationism. The trails that now draw trekkers from across Europe were, until the early 2000s, used only by shepherds moving flocks between winter and summer pasture. That quality of undiscovered wildness is not manufactured — it is real, and it is the region's defining characteristic.

What you will find here: hospitality of a depth that feels almost archaic by European standards; landscapes that in any other country would be nationally iconic; and the particular freedom that belongs to a place still working out its relationship with the outside world.

Character

What makes North Albania singular

Untouched Alpine Wilderness

The Accursed Mountains remained almost entirely off-limits to outsiders until the early 2000s. Today they offer trekking with a frontier quality that the Alps lost generations ago — without the lifts, the coffee-shop prices, or the crowds.

Living Highland Culture

The Kanun — a 15th-century code of highland law governing hospitality, marriage, property and blood feud — is still informally observed in remote villages. Nowhere else in Europe can you encounter traditions of this antiquity still genuinely alive.

The Great Slow Journeys

The Komani Lake ferry and the Valbona-to-Theth trail have become, among a small community of serious European slow travellers, the two essential experiences of the northern Balkans. Both remain unhurried and impossible to replicate.

Practical Information for traveling to the region

Berat sits 122 km south of Tirana's Nënë Tereza International Airport (TIA). The drive takes 1 hour 30 minutes via the SH72. Furgon minibuses depart Tirana's Kombinat bus terminal from 06:00, running every 30–60 minutes until mid-afternoon (approx. 600 ALL, 2 hours). We recommend arriving by car or private transfer for maximum flexibility around the city's hillside quarters.
